According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Nokia has an edge over Apple in patent filings during the year 2010 in the United States, where Nokia filed 760 patents while Apple only 563. However, neither Nokia nor Apple were at the top of the list, which was dominated by IBM with 5896 patents, which has held the first place for the past 18 years. Nokia’s overall rank was 33rd and Apple’s 46th.

Nokia has increased its pace in filing patents in the United States – in 2010 it filed over 100 more patents than it did in 2009. As Apple and Nokia continue their legal battles on multiple fronts in various patent disputes, it is understandable that filing patents at a quick pace especially in the United States is crucial in the high paced tech world. May the smartest engineer win!
